Scaffolds From the Ground Up
A scaffold competent person has to think about the whole structure, starting with what it's standing on. The class works through the decisions they'll make on a real site, in the order they'll make them, and finishes with the inspection they'll do every shift.

What EM 385-1-1 Asks of a Scaffold Competent Person
The 2024 manual calls for a documented minimum of 8 hours of scaffold training, including training on the specific type of scaffold being used, and lists what the employer's competent person training must include: assessment of the base material, load calculations for materials and personnel, erection and dismantling, and the training requirements in the applicable ANSI standard (paragraph 22-3.b). Our class is eight hours for that reason, and we'll cover the systems you use when we know them ahead of time.
The competent person for scaffolding is designated in writing by the employer (paragraph 22-2.a). On the job, they inspect scaffolds and components for visible defects before each work shift and after anything that could affect structural integrity (paragraph 22-5.a), and they tag each scaffold with their name, signature, and inspection dates (paragraph 22-5.c). Some scaffolds also need a written Scaffold Work Plan: tube and coupler scaffolds of any size, supported scaffolds more than four times as tall as their base is wide, suspended scaffolds, and scaffolds that have to be tented for weather (paragraph 22-7.a).
