EM 385 Fall Protection Competent Person Refresher.
A two-hour, in-person refresher for competent persons who have already completed full fall protection competent person training. It brings them back up to date on the fall protection and rescue requirements and gives them time to work through the questions that came up on their own sites.

- Changes to fall protection and rescue requirements since the last class
- The competent person's duties under EM 385-1-1 chapter 21, reviewed
- Clearance, swing fall, and anchorage decisions, worked through as examples
- Equipment inspection and removal from service
- Rescue plans, and whether yours would work on the site you have today
- Open discussion of situations from your own projects

The Refresher Interval in EM 385-1-1
The 2024 manual sets annual refresher training of at least two hours of fall protection and rescue-related informational meetings or training for USACE's own fall protection competent persons (paragraph 21-3.c(3)). If your program or your contract holds your competent persons to the same interval, this class is built to it. Read your contract's safety section, or ask us, if you're not sure what applies to you.
The manual also requires competent person training to be conducted by a competent person or qualified person trainer (paragraph 21-3.c(1)), and all fall protection training to follow ANSI/ASSP Z359.2 and ANSI/ASSP Z490.1 (paragraph 21-3). The refresher doesn't replace initial training: people who haven't completed full competent person training should start with our Fall Protection Competent Person Training.
