What EM 385-1-1 Says About This Training
The 2024 edition of EM 385-1-1 calls for initial competent person fall protection training of at least 24 hours of course work, combining formal classroom training with a performance assessment of each trainee, and for the trainer to document the training and issue a single certificate showing it was completed (paragraph 21-3.c(2)). Our class is 24 hours for that reason.
The manual defines the competent person for fall protection as someone designated in writing by the employer (paragraph 21-2.i), and gives that person the authority to stop work that is unsafe (paragraph 21-3.c(4)). We teach the class for commercial crews under OSHA's construction standards too. The equipment and the hazards are the same; what changes on a federal job is the paperwork and the plans that go with them.
